Acupuncture
When placed in identified points, the needles increase blood circulation, which achieves better healing. Acupuncture stimulates the nervous system and increases the release of certain hormones to help reduce a pet’s discomfort.
Pain management with many musculoskeletal problems such as arthritis, hip dysplasia, or nerve injuries are one of the most common uses for acupuncture, often in conjunction with a more traditional treatment plan.
Numerous skin problems like atopy and hot spots typically respond well to acupuncture treatment, again due to the increased circulation, while reducing pain will reduce overgrooming or itching responses.
Gastrointestinal problems like nausea and diarrhea can be treated with acupuncture. It can also help digestive activity by increasing and stimulating normal digestive secretions.
Problems like asthma, allergies, and other respiratory concerns can improve greatly from the immune-calming, anti-inflammatory benefits of acupuncture.
Is acupuncture safe for my pet?
Acupuncture is very safe, with minimal to no negative effects when performed by a trained individual. Mild bleeding or bruising at the acupuncture points is generally the only negative effect. Certain acupuncture points are avoided in pregnant or very weak or debilitated animals, and direct placement of needles into tumors or masses are avoided.
Chinese Herbs
Herbs may take longer to appear to work versus regular medication. Depending upon the condition improvements may not even be noticed for the first few weeks. Length of time needed to be on herbs will also be based on condition, acute or chronic. Herbs may be prescribed for several months to help the body achieve some time of normalcy. The dosing may need to change, so it is important to schedule regular rechecks with the vet.
