It’s that time of year again! Everywhere we turn, there’s pumpkin—lattes, candles, baked goods…people are even dousing themselves in the fall-themed perfume. While this seasonal takeover happens, we often forget to include our furry friends in the celebration.
Pumpkin is a great addition to your pet’s diet. Although cats aren’t typically big fans, both cats and dogs can benefit from this nutritious treat. Pet parents in on the secret usually vouch for plain canned pumpkin (this is not pumpkin pie filling!). You can also use fresh pumpkin, just make sure it’s plain, cooked flesh with no added spices, oils, or sugars. Avoid the stem, leaves, skin, and seeds, as they can be harmful to digest.
Benefits:
- Digestive Health: helps with both diarrhea and constipation due to its fiber content
- Weight Management: can act as a low-calorie supplement, helping pets feel full with less food
- Nutritional Benefits: rich in vitamins A,C, and E, plus potassium and iron; great for skin, coat, and immune support
Some pets may have sensitivities, so start slowly and talk to your veterinarian before making any drastic diet changes. At Pressly Animal Hospital, we’re always here to help you make safe, healthy choices for your pet, seasonal treats included!
