There are a few simple steps you can take to keep your animal companions healthy.

You can feed them high-quality food, groom them regularly, and make sure they get plenty of love and exercise. While each of these are vital in their own way, there is one part of their care that’s more important than all of them combined: having your pet vaccinated. Keeping up with your pets’ vaccinations may not be at the top of your to-do list, but at Pressly Animal Hospital we do our best to make establishing – and sticking to – a vaccine schedule as easy as possible. For optimal health, we recommend that dogs and cats of all ages should be vaccinated in order to ensure their long-term health and avoid preventable diseases. To make that goal a reality, we offer affordable and convenient pet vaccinations here in Matthews and Indian Trail.

Recommended Dog Vaccinations

Recommended Dog Vaccinations

We recommend that all puppies and dogs receive their core vaccines in addition to some lifestyle vaccinations to protect them against common life-threatening illnesses. Core vaccines protect dogs from canine distemper, adenovirus type 2, parvovirus, leptospirosis, and coronavirus. These diseases can be difficult or impossible to treat effectively, and they can be especially deadly in puppies. We also highly recommend vaccinating your dog against Bordetella, parainfluenza and canine influenza. This is especially important if you take your dog to a boarding facility, groomer, or even a dog park. If you board your pet with us, we require that he or she receive the Bordetella vaccine every six months. As Lyme disease is becoming increasingly common in the south, we also recommend Lyme vaccines for dogs who spend much time outdoors. Using a high-quality flea and tick preventative helps prevent Lyme disease, heartworm and other parasites, too.
Recommended Cat Vaccinations

Recommended Cat Vaccinations

For cats and kittens, we recommend vaccinating against feline viral rhinotracheitis (FVR), calicivirus, and panleukopenia. We may also recommend the feline leukemia virus if your cat lives or spends much time outdoors.
Rabies Vaccinations

Rabies Vaccinations

All cats and dogs are required by law to be vaccinated against rabies in North Carolina. These vaccinations can be administered as early as 12 weeks of age, and boosters are given annually or every three years. We offer a monthly rabies clinic to help keep your pets up-to-date on this vital vaccine.

Additional Preventive Care for Dogs

On top of regular vaccinations, there are a few other steps owners can take to keep disease at bay and help their pets live long, healthy lives. For our canine companions, heartworm testing and preventatives can save an animal’s life. This infection is deadly in dogs, but it’s also easy to prevent. Routine intestinal parasite checks can help us identify when there’s a problem. Flea and tick preventatives offer your pet protection from those bugs as well as the diseases they carry.

Additional Preventive Care for Cats

Cats can also benefit from some additional preventive care on top of their regular vaccines. Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) are both infections that can greatly affect the quality of life of your pet. Testing for them allows us to provide supportive treatments earlier, extending the life of your pet. Outdoor cats are especially at risk for both of these diseases. Routine intestinal parasite checks give us an opportunity to test for dangerous parasitic infections that are common in cats. Both indoor and outdoor cats can also greatly benefit from flea prevention medication.
